Complete Guide: How to Clean and Maintain Skateboard Bearings
Bearings are the heart of skateboard wheels: the cleaner and better lubricated they are, the smoother and faster the board rolls. Sand, dust, and water are the worst enemies: they reduce smoothness and can cause rust.
1. What you need
-
Skate tool or socket wrench
-
Small screwdriver (to remove shields/cages)
-
Plastic or glass container
-
Solvent (isopropyl alcohol, pure acetone, or specific bearing cleaner)
-
Clean cloth or paper towel
-
Specific bearing lubricant: for example Bones Speed Cream, Swiss Oil or light skateboard bearing oils.
-
Latex gloves (optional)
2. Bearing Disassembly
-
Remove the wheels with the skate tool.
-
Gently pull the bearings out of the wheels.
-
If the bearings have shields (side covers), remove them with a small screwdriver or needle, without bending them.
3. Deep Cleaning
-
Place the bearings in the container.
-
Pour the solvent until they are completely covered.
-
Gently shake for a few minutes: dirt and old lubricant will dissolve.
-
Remove the bearings and dry them well with absorbent paper.
-
Let them air dry for a few minutes, making sure no moisture remains.
4. Lubrication
-
Apply 1–2 drops of specific lubricant inside each bearing.
-
Rotate the balls with your fingers to evenly distribute the oil.
-
Avoid generic lubricants: they slow down the bearing and do not protect against wear.
5. Reassembly
-
Reinsert the shields (if present).
-
Reinstall the bearings into the wheels.
-
Screw the wheels back onto the trucks and check that they spin freely.
6. Maintenance Tips
-
Avoid skating on sandy or wet surfaces.
-
Never wash the skateboard with water.
-
Clean and re-lubricate every 1–2 months if you use the skateboard often.
-
Use only bearing-specific lubricant to maintain speed and protection.
Conclusion
Properly cleaning and lubricating the bearings with the right oil increases smoothness and durability. With just a few minutes of maintenance, you can protect your skateboard from sand, dust, and water.
